Data

A treemap chart to showcase popular gate colors and how the 4 HDB blocks differ.

Introduction

As mentioned earlier, Stacked Colors features popular gate colors from HDB housing flats, specifically in Choa Chu Kang. This project also offer insights into the country's issue of land shortage.

As a topic that I incorporate into my work often, I wanted to challenge myself to find hidden insights and observations of an everyday scenario and to show that every family is unique.

Data Visualisation

The data visualization is a treemap chart consisting of nested rectangles proportional to the specified percentages and numbers of gate colors collected. A treemap chart allows for easy visual comparison of different data values through the use of various colors and shape sizes. Additionally, the grid lines and rectangular shapes give a sense of the urban environment of the actual HDB gates and blocks.

Findings

I visited 174 flat units across 4 HDB blocks in Choa Chu Kang and concluded that black is the most popular gate color choice, followed by brown and white. Below is the total number of gates for each color.

Color Number
Black 63
Brown 51
White 21
Pink 9
Grey 9
Silver 9
Blue 5
Green 3
Yellow 2
Beige 1
Orange 1

Insights

Evidently, the data visualization shows that black and brown gates are the most popular color choices among the residents. However, one interesting discovery is that red gates are not seen in this particular area, although red is considered an auspicious color for Chinese households. It was also quite surprising to see yellow and orange gates, especially since they are bright colors. Additionally, light pink gates are much more popular than I thought.

Conclusion

Black, brown, and white are 'safer' colors and easier to mix and match with the doors. Hence, they are the most popular color choices based on the data collected and visualized. Also, race or ethnic groups do not significantly impact the color choices of their flat gates. In the end, it ultimately comes down to personal preferences.
